Egidijus Dragūnas, or simply Sel, the uncontrollable young hip-hop hoodlum who later became a soulful author of electronic music, has been in the Lithuanian music business for more than 15 years and is frequently encountered in tabloids. The artist has made a great contribution to Lithuanian music culture and is one of the most prominent music figures to date.
The band‘s story began on November 10, 1992 when its founder and leader Egidijus Dragūnas decided to call Andrius Mamontovas (who had a radio show on M-1 at the time) and ask him to help put together a rap group. With courage and determination, the young men fell into the hands of good producers. Soon after, hits like Kašio fanatas (eng. Basketball Fanatic), Kontrolinis šūvis (eng. Practice Shot) or Neįvertinta karta (eng. Unappreciated Generation) greatly influenced hip-hop culture in Lithuania. Their songs, inspired by the latest Western hip-hop fads, were met with public controversy and simultaneously allowed the band to make a place for itself in the Lithuanian music industry.
At its peak of popularity towards the end of the decade, Sel suddenly changed its artistic direction. It traded street poetry for deeper electronic experimentation. The musicians‘ quests surpassed even the most optimistic of hopes and their albums Guma (eng. Gum) and Kubas (eng. Cube) are still considered to be the best examples of electronic music. Sel has been awarded the country‘s most prestigious awards and with 12 very successful albums under its belt, the band continues to be one of the most significant music projects in Lithuania.
